Some campers prefer to only camp during the spring and summer months, which is perfectly reasonable, especially here in the Midwest, where we get some serious winter weather. However, if you’re motivated to camp in all four seasons, you’ll want to be sure that you’re ready to handle below-freezing temperatures, snow, slush, sleet, and all the rest of it. Here are our tips on how to get yourself and your RV ready for your winter camping adventures.

Add Insulation

Make your RV warm and toasty inside by adding some vent cushions to your vents to prevent warm air from escaping. You can add an insulating cling-film to your windows, along with thicker curtains to block out the cold. If your water system has any areas that aren’t insulated (by being inside a cabinet, for example), you may want to add some insulation around them to keep them from freezing.

Pack Extra Gear

It’s a good idea to prepare for emergencies, since you’re more likely to get stuck somewhere due to bad roads or sudden blizzards when you’re camping over the winter. Stock up on non-perishable food and bottled water, along with an emergency radio, rope, an ax, repair tools, duct tape, batteries, and flashlights.

Make Things Cozy

A small space heater is a nice addition to your RV in the winter, even if you’ve got a heating system, since it can help to warm up whatever space you’re currently in. You’ll also want to pack some thicker wool blankets and flannel sheets, instead of the cooler linens you might use during the hot summer months. It’s a good idea to stock up on extra propane if you’re going to be boondocking so that you aren’t (literally) left out in the cold with no power.
