While many people with campers head to a local campground or park where they can hook up their recreational vehicles to power and water sources, some people prefer “boondocking,” or dry camping. This is the practice of camping without access to any utilities; you have to provide yourself with water and power. Here are some tips on how to boondock successfully.

Check Regulations

Both the town or city that you’re boondocking in and the state you’re in may have regulations or laws around where and how long you can park your camper. Make sure to look these up so that you’re not in violation of any rules. Otherwise, you could get towed or ticketed. Typically, you can’t build a fire anywhere outside of a campground. Find a place with an established fire pit that you can use instead.

Leave No Trace

One common tip for boondockers is to make sure that they leave any place they camp in better condition than it was when they parked there. Don’t leave any trash or recycling behind, and don’t damage the environment, either. If you see other people’s trash, pick it up!

Powering Your Camper

In order to camp without hookups, you need a power source. Usually, this will either be in the form of solar panels or propane tanks that fuel a generator. Each has its merits, although propane tanks are the easier option if your camper doesn’t have solar panels installed. You may want to consider installing them if you intend to boondock often.
