How to Securely Store Food in Your Camper
You stock your camper’s kitchen with tasty ingredients and dry goods for preparing meals, only to discover that ants, mice, or other pests have invaded your valuable food stores and created a huge mess. What can you do about this?
Because campers spend so much time in the wilderness amongst a wide variety of little critters and insects, secure food storage is a must on your RV. Here are some strategies to help prevent an infestation from waylaying your meal prep.
1. Invest in Airtight Containers
Get rid of the cardboard boxes for your cereal, crackers, and snacks. Instead, pour everything into an airtight glass jar or plastic container with a sealing lid. This allows you to keep your food fresh and secure, while also letting you see what the food is and how much of it you have left. Also, airtight containers tend to be much easier to store and stack than the boxes your food comes in.
2. Contain Liquids
Alcohol, vinegar, oils, dressings, and other fluids in glass or plastic containers could fall and shatter or spill. Place all of these items inside a plastic tote in your fridge and in your cabinet so that if anything does spill in transit, the mess is contained.
3. Use Dehydrated Foods
The full version of every type of food you eat is going to end up becoming heavy and bulky on your RV. Also, it may be more prone to mildew or mold growth. Try getting dehydrated foods like instant potato flakes, instant coffee, powdered dry milk, dehydrated soup packets, and pouches of oatmeal that are lightweight, contained, and less likely to spoil.
