How to Prevent Your Travel Trailer from Tipping Over

Apr. 30 2024 Safety By Herold Trailer Sales

When you’re driving and towing your travel trailer, you may find that it’s beginning to tip to one side. If left unchecked, that tipping can result in the entire trailer tipping over on its side, causing a serious accident and expensive repairs. If you know what to watch for and what to avoid, though, you can reduce the risk of your travel trailer tipping over.

Why Is This a Risk?

You may be wondering what makes it possible for a travel trailer to tip over in the first place. Because travel trailers are large and bulky, they are liable to become unbalanced easily if you aren’t careful. There are several things that can cause tipping, including unbalanced cargo loads, a worn-out hitch, tires that aren’t inflated correctly, or even just wind.

What to Do

First, always make sure that you balance the cargo you place in your travel trailer evenly from side to side. You don’t want either side to become too heavy, as this can tip the trailer over to that side.

Also, always check the condition of your tires on both your trailer and your towing vehicle before each trip. Your tires should be in good condition with plenty of tread and they need to be aired up to the right psi levels.

You should check that your hitch is in good shape and that it’s properly latched before departure. When you’re driving, you’ll need to be mindful of any sensation of the trailer tipping behind you and be prepared to slow down gradually to reduce it. Avoid hitting the brakes or taking tight turns, too.
