Long-term exposure to cold temperatures can wreak havoc on your RV. If you want your RV to still be in good condition when you pull it back out in the springtime, you’ll need to winterize it. If you’ve never winterized an RV before or you could use a refresher, take a look at this guide from Herold Trailer Sales.

Interior

While cold temperatures tend to discourage mold/mildew growth, it’s still a good idea to thoroughly clean the inside of your RV before you store it for the winter. Electronics, clothing, and perishable items such as food should also be removed. Once the interior of your RV is squared away, you can move on to the plumbing and exterior.

Plumbing

When water freezes, its volume increases by about 9%. While this might not seem like much, it’s more than enough to cause damage to your RV’s pipes. That’s why it’s important that you drain out the hot water heater, fresh water tank, and holding tank. You should also open all of your faucets just to make sure no water remains. If you’re having trouble getting all the water out of your water heater, consider using a non-toxic antifreeze.

Exterior

To winterize your RV’s exterior, close any vents/windows, and then give the outside of your RV a thorough cleaning. Don’t forget to retract and clean the awning as well. Locks and hinges need to be lubricated so that they don’t freeze up. We highly recommend utilizing an RV cover, as it can provide your RV with protection from environmental factors both in and out of winter.

Tires

Temperature fluctuations are not good for your RV’s tires. On top of that, tires that go unused for too long can develop flat spots. You’ll need to either lift your RV off the ground using jacks or visit the storage facility 2-3 times over the seasons to shift your RV about half a tire revolution.
